Heal a traumatic brain injury

How to heal a traumatic brain injury now

A traumatic brain injury is caused by a sudden injury that damages the brain. This can be caused by a number of happenings such as a fall, blow, or jolt to a head. Today, my goal is to build awareness of the condition and identify ways we can support those that are suffering from it.

What symptoms should I expect to see in those with a traumatic brain injury?

First, traumatic brain injury can cause symptoms that affect physical, sensory, cognitive, and behavioral functioning. If you have ever experienced a concussion the symptoms immediately after the impact is much like that.

So, they may lose consciousness for minutes to hours, have a persistent headache, profound confusion, and slurred speech. They may show a loss of coordination, memory and concentration difficulties, vertigo, and more. In severe circumstances people may develop seizures, blood vessel damage, and infections.

So, what happens to the brain following a Traumatic Brain injury?

The effects and severity of the impact on one’s ability to live their life to the fullest depends on the severity of the injury and supports in place. A TBI may result in long-term consequences that impact one’s life on a cognitive, behavioral, physical, emotional, and relational level.

Someone with a traumatic brain injury may struggle with completing daily activities and doing what was once considered simple tasks. However, there is hope! Support systems and programs are put into place to increase quality of life following an injury.

How do you go on living a fulfilling life following such a devastating injury?

One of the therapists on our team, Christina, survived a traumatic brain injury due to a severe car accident. Her resilience and support network enabled her to survive the devastating event.

She grew a passion for supporting others that struggle with conditions like her own. Then, she picked herself up and decided to live her life to support others by becoming a micro current neurofeedback practitioner.

Furthermore, micro current neurofeedback supports those that struggle with traumatic brain injury and help you live a fulfilling life.

How can I support loved ones that suffer from a traumatic brain injury?

It can feel overwhelming when we are faced with the question of how we can support a loved one following a tragedy. But, there are many ways we can build a support system that empowers them to lead a fulfilling life.

Educating ourselves on what traumatic brain injury looks like and what to expect is a huge step towards becoming a reliable support. Forming and utilizing a community that comes together to assist them in having their needs met makes the world of a difference!

Explaining to those in their inner circle about what to expect and the symptoms of traumatic brain injury is helpful. It will give others the tools necessary to show up in the best way possible.

Taking the initiative to offer to do work that they are currently unable to or have difficulty doing such as scheduling times to meet with a doctor will alleviate stress. And, untapping empathy and holding space for them during their time of need is incredibly useful. Lastly, supporting them while they heal will turn a seemingly impossible situation to a manageable one.

What treatments, programs, and supports are out in the community for those with a traumatic brain injury?

Rehabilitation programs are available to help people that have a traumatic brain injury improve brain functioning and walk down their road to recovery. Many programs offer physical therapy, medicine, and occupational therapy.

Occupational therapy assists in returning to or entering a work environment by providing options to succeed despite workplace challenges. Cognitive therapy may be utilized to improve brain processes such as learning, memory, and attention.

Counseling and psychiatric care can assist in building resiliency and gaining coping skills to support the individual. Speech and language therapy may be offered to those that had their ability to talk and form sentences negatively impacted by the injury.

Many programs offer building social support networks within the community. All of these avenues of support work together to create the opportunity to recover and lead a fulfilling life following crisis. Micro current neurofeedback is often used to heal the brain following traumatic brain injury.
