EMDR Therapy for Trauma

unveiling Trauma

Anyone at any age can experience trauma. Whether you are living day to day with emotional distress or anxiety or have experienced a large and significant traumatic event, with EMDR, you have the power to take back your life and heal your mind.

What is the impact of a traumatic event?

Trauma has the ability to push your mind into overdrive; the impact ranging from subtle to quite harmful. There are many factors and influences that determine the impact trauma has on an individual.

A traumatic event can affect you in numerous areas of your life - mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, developmentally, and so on. That is why it is vital to remember that everyone’s experience of and response to a traumatic event will differ.

Is there something to help me with my traumatic experience?

A proven psychotherapy method, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), is designed to enable people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress associated with their traumatic memories. It safely allows you to reprocess life experiences, anxieties, and fears while addressing the core beliefs you hold within. EMDR can help you live in a way that allows you to choose to thrive in the midst of past or present trauma.

EMDR typically consists of 8 phases - during which you can expect to learn the following:

  • The physical and emotional reactions to trauma

  • Coping skills associated with traumatic memories or sensations

  • Acknowledging your traumatic memory & mitigating the distress associated with it

  • Finding and focusing on a positive belief regarding your traumatic memory

What can my EMDR therapist help with?

  • Acute Trauma - sexual assault, car accidents, natural disasters

  • Chronic Trauma - childhood or domestic abuse

  • Panic Disorders

  • Anxiety

  • …. and more

How can EMDR help combat my trauma?

As a natural response to revisiting trauma, your body’s nervous system is going to activate, leaving you feeling less than ideal. The good news is that through the process of EMDR, those sensations can be rerouted.

One way that is achieved is by a sensory stimuli called bilateral stimulation. Your therapist will use eye movement, tapping, or tones to simultaneously activate both sides of your brain.

During this process, our brains do not have the capacity to focus entirely on the stimulation and the traumatic memory at once. This gives you and your practitioner the ability to tackle the traumatic memory from a different angle. As a result, this technique may help with -

  • Calming your nervous system

  • Allowing traumatic memories to become less vivid, altering your relationship to the negative trigger

  • Enhancing your ability to access positive thoughts, images, and body sensations while paying attention to the trauma and existing coping skills

Every step of this process will be tailored to you, with you in control through the entirety of it. The relief you experience is due to your own ability to tap into your emotional and intellectual strength! Your therapist is there to provide comfort, knowledge, and a safe space for your healing.
